Best Pet Insurance Canada: Prices, Coverage and Exclusions

Ian Brian February 2, 2023

Your pet’s well-being and quality of life depend on the insurer. The best pet insurance canada will ensure you have peace of mind financially for the different medical demands of your pet.

Best Pet Insurance Canada

A. Desjardins

If you want to insure your pet with Desjardins, there are three plans. You can choose a Bronze Paw, a Silver Paw, or a Gold Paw. Each of these plans has what it covers and exceptions as well.

Plans

1. Bronze Paw

This plan is the most basic you can take to insure your pet with Desjardins.

Coverage

  • lllness – you can get up to $2,000 of annual reimbursements per policy year.
  • Accident – you can get up to $2,000 reimbursement per Accident.

Exclusions

As an entry-level plan, there are more exclusions than the Silver Paw and Gold Paw plans. Bronze Paw will not cover the following:

  • Medical devices
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Alternative Therapy
  • Preventive care coverage

Options

Dental care is listed as an option in the Bronze Paw plan. You can claim up to $500 dental compensation per policy year as a member.

Pricing

Insuring a pet with Desjardins will cost you a monthly average of $37 per dog and $26 per cat. This price is listed as an average because it could vary based on where you live, the breed of your pet, and at times its size.

2. Silver Paw

It is the modest plan that Desjardins offers for its members. The plan extends all benefits you get with entry-level Bronze Paw.

Coverage

Under Silver Paw Policy, you will get up to $700 reimbursement of dental care per policy. This is $200 more than dental care in Bronze Paw.

Desjardins will allow you to claim up to $4,000 per illness per policy year, twice the amount you can get in reimbursements under Bronze Paw Plan.

With accidents, you get twice as much as you would with the Bronze Paw. This plan allows you to claim reimbursements of up to $4,000 per accident.

For Alternative therapy, behavioral therapy, and medical devices, Desjardins will allow you as a member to claim up to $350 per category per policy year. However, this will be an option if you feel it’s necessary for your pet.

Options

Alternative therapy, behavioral therapy, and medical devices are listed as an option for members who want them included in the insurance policy of their pets.

Exclusions

  • Preventive care coverage.

Pricing

An insurance policy for one dog will cost you a monthly average of $59, and a cat’s policy will cost you $42 monthly average.

3. Gold Paw

Coverage

Gold Paw is the exclusive plan Desjardins will let you have for your pet. It includes all benefits of Silver Paw (including Silver Paw’s options and exclusions).

The plan is intended to make your life stress-free in the event that would compromise the health and well-being of your pet.

For dental care, you can claim up to $1,000 per policy year. This is $300 more than you would claim for the Silver Paw plan and double the reimbursement you would get with the entry-level Bronze Paw plan.

Desjardins allows you to claim an unlimited amount in case of your pet’s illness or accident. This is why it is among the best pet insurance canada.

Unfortunately, you will only claim up to $350 per category per policy year for alternative therapy, behavioral therapy, and medical devices. This is equivalent to the amount you can claim for the Silver Paw plan.

Pricing

This premium plan will cost you a monthly average of $136 per dog and $87 per cat.

B. Pets Plus Us

Coverage

1. Accident and illness

Seven out of ten members of Pet Plus Us choose Accident and Illness insurance. Do you know that 80% of the time, you will take your pet to the veterinarian will be prompted by illness?

The Accident and Illness coverage ranges from $7,500 to $15,000 annually. You decide how much Pets Plus Us will pay in case of a veterinary bill.

For instance, if you decide you want 90% of veterinary bill payment by Pet Plus Us, it includes the applicable tax. On your side, as the pet owner, you will only pay 10% of the veterinary bill plus your pet’s monthly insurance premium.

It is a flexible plan, probably more than you can wish for. This explains why 80% of Pets Plus Us members prefer the pets’ Accident and Illness plan.

2. Accident

Even though you can reduce the chances of your pet getting into an accident, they will certainly get caught at times. Some accidents could result in unexpected outcomes for your pet. It would be best if you chose this plan for one thing; the ability to choose the best care for the injured pet.

This plan is, however, less extensive in terms of coverage. You only get up to $5,000 annually for unlimited accidents and injuries.

Come to think of this:

  • What if you exhaust the $5,000 when it is too early?
  • What if your pet gets ill without necessarily getting into an accident?

The answers to these two questions support why the plan is bought only by 20% of Plus Pets Us members.

This plan is less flexible because you only get 80% of veterinary bill reimbursement, tax inclusive. You do not have the option of deciding to receive either 70% or 90%, as is the case with the Accidents and Illness plan.

As a pet owner, you must pay 20% of veterinary bills and monthly premiums whenever your pet gets in an accident.

Exceptions

  • Medical conditions noted prior to enrollment
  • Pre-existing medical symptoms prior to enrollment

C. CAA

CAA gives you alternatives to choose the best plan you think fits your purchase. You can go for the entry-level plan called Compact, the modest plan called Intermediate, and the Premium plan called Luxury.

Plans

For all these three plans, the difference is minimal. The only difference between these three plans is the reimbursable amount you can claim for what is included in your pet’s insurance plan.

1. Compact

Compact Plan has the most exclusions for its basic and special coverage and special benefits.

Coverage

  • Accidents.
  • Veterinary fee.
  • Alternative treatments.
  • Medical devices.
  • Holiday cancellation.
  • Prescription food.
  • Lost pet advertising and reward.

Exclusions

  • Illness coverage.
  • Dental care for your pet is available for both intermediate and Luxury Plans.
  • Behavioral therapy, again, is available for pet owners with intermediate and Luxury plans.
  • Your pet will be excluded from boarding kennel fees per incident. This is only available for members with Intermediate and Luxury Plans for their pets.

2. Intermediate and Luxury

These two plans cover everything covered under the compact plan and its exclusions. The difference is the maximum amount you can claim for each plan per policy year.

D. The personal
